Follow Friday: I Will Not Let You Go

Jacob was left alone at the river, and he wrestled with God until daybreak. Wounded but unwilling to let go, he asked for a blessing instead of grabbing one. Beautiful soul, if you are in your longest night, hold on. Morning is coming, and so is your blessing.

Follow Friday: I Will Not Let You Go
He held on through the night, and at daybreak the blessing came. Hold on, beautiful soul. Your morning is coming.
Whisper: Some blessings are not given in the light. They are held on to through the night.

Good morning, beautiful soul.

This week, we have walked with Jacob from a stone pillow to a river at midnight. We heard him tell the truth about his name and pray God's promise back to Him.

Today, we step into the wrestling match itself. Because following God is not always a peaceful walk down a quiet road. Some nights, it is a fight to hold on.

Left Alone

That night, Jacob sent his family and all his possessions across the Jabbok. Everything he had worked for was now on the other side of the river. His family. His flocks. His wealth. Every single thing he had grabbed, earned, or built.

And he was left with nothing but himself.

"So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak." (Genesis 32:24)

Beautiful soul, have you ever had a night like that? A season when everything you leaned on was stripped away, and it was just you and God in the dark? It feels like loss. But it may be the most important appointment of your life.

The Longest Night

The Bible tells us only that the fight lasted until daybreak. Hours of struggle in the dust and the dark.

And somewhere in that wrestling, Jacob realized who he was holding on to.

"When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man." (Genesis 32:25)

One touch, and Jacob's strength was gone. We will talk more about that wound tomorrow. But notice what Jacob did next. He did not let go. If anything, he held on tighter.

A Different Kind of Grip

"Then the man said, 'Let me go, for it is daybreak.' But Jacob replied, 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.'" (Genesis 32:26)

Think about Jacob's hands, beautiful soul.

Those hands grabbed his brother's heel at birth. Those hands wore goatskin to steal a blessing. Jacob had spent his whole life grabbing for what he wanted.

But tonight, his grip is different. He is not grabbing a birthright. He is not reaching for a blessing that belongs to someone else. He is holding on to God Himself.

For the first time in his life, Jacob is not trying to take the blessing. He is asking for it.

The Tears We Never Saw

Centuries later, the prophet Hosea looked back on this night and told us something Genesis leaves out.

"In the womb he grasped his brother's heel; as a man he struggled with God. He struggled with the angel and overcame him; he wept and begged for his favor. He found him at Bethel and talked with him there." (Hosea 12:3-4)

He wept.

The wrestling was not only strength. It was surrender. A grown man, holding on to God with everything he had left, crying for His favor. And notice how Hosea ties the whole story together. The heel. The struggle. And Bethel, where heaven first opened on Monday.

That is what it looks like to follow God through a dark night. Not polished prayers. Tears and a grip that refuses to let go.

Face to Face

"Jacob said, 'Please tell me your name.' But he replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' Then he blessed him there." (Genesis 32:29)

Then he blessed him there. Right there in the dust. Right in the place of the struggle.

"So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, 'It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.'" (Genesis 32:30)

Jacob had been terrified of seeing his brother's face. But before he ever faced Esau, he faced God. And once you have seen the face of God, every other face looks a little less frightening.

Stay With Us

Here is where Follow Friday brings us to Jesus.

After the resurrection, two discouraged disciples walked the road to Emmaus with Jesus, though they did not recognize Him. When they reached their village, something beautiful happened.

"Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, 'Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.' So he went in to stay with them." (Luke 24:28-29)

As if He were going farther. Just like the man at the river said, "Let me go." And just like Jacob, they would not let Him walk on without them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.

Beautiful soul, following Jesus sometimes means refusing to let Him pass you by, even when you are tired and the road is dark.

Your Follow Friday Practice

  1. Name the wrestling. Write down what you are struggling with right now. Your fear, your past, or your questions.
  2. Hold on. Every day this week, pray one honest prayer, even if it is only, "I will not let You go."
  3. Ask Him to stay. Before you start your day, say the words of the Emmaus disciples: "Stay with me, Lord."

Note from Eugenia

Beautiful soul, some of my deepest moments with God did not happen on bright mornings. They happened on long nights when everything I had was on the other side of the river. I wept. I wrestled. I held on with whatever strength I had left. And every single time, morning came. If you are in the middle of your longest night, please do not let go. The blessing is closer than it feels, and daybreak is already on its way.

"Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." (Luke 18:1)

A Parable for the Long Night

There was once a traveler who had to cross a deep canyon on a rope bridge. Before he stepped out, the Bridge Builder placed the guide rope in his hands and said, "Do not let go of this. You will not always see the other side, but I tied this end myself."

Halfway across, night fell and a storm came. The bridge swayed. The wind howled. He could not see his own feet, let alone the other side. His hands grew raw, and every part of him wanted to let go.

So he did the only thing he could. He held the rope and whispered into the dark, "I will not let go. I will not let go."

He held on all night.

When daybreak came, he looked up and wept. He was only a few steps from the edge. And there stood the Bridge Builder, hands stretched out, waiting for him.

Beautiful soul, prayer is that rope. You may not see the other side tonight. But the One who tied it is already standing there, waiting for you at daybreak.

(You may not be able to see the other side but you just might be standing right next to the edge 😉)

Frequency Feature: "Who You Say I Am" by Hillsong Worship and Brooke Ligertwood

Beautiful soul, did you know the album this song came from was born out of Jacob's long night at the river?

"Who You Say I Am" opened Hillsong Worship's 2018 live album There Is More, and the whole record was built on Genesis 32. Brooke Ligertwood described it this way: on the other side of Jacob's encounter was a new name, a new blessing, a new identity, and a new way of walking. She asked whether we would be people who dare to wrestle with God and be changed in the process.

Songwriters Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan wrote it after talking about how many people are carrying anxiety and stress. They realized how important it is to know what God says about us. The song is anchored in the words of Jesus:

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36)

That is exactly what happened to Jacob. He held on through the night, and at daybreak God gave him a new name.

"Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.'" (Genesis 32:28)

As you listen, let every line become your own grip on Him. Chosen, not forsaken. You are who He says you are.
