Follow Friday: You Have Never Been This Way Before
At the edge of the Promised Land, God told Israel to follow the ark, since they had never been that way before. This Follow Friday explores following His presence, stepping into the water first, and the day the manna stopped.
Whisper: You do not need a map for a road you have never walked. You need His presence in front of you.
Good morning, beautiful soul.
Yesterday we watched David dance before the ark of God, and we waved goodbye to the end of beginning. Today, we are going back to an earlier day in the story of that same ark. The day it led God's people out of one season and into the next.
Because sometimes the hardest part of a new season is not leaving the old one. It is stepping into a place you have never been.
Follow the Ark
After forty years in the wilderness, Israel finally stood at the edge of the Promised Land. Only one thing stood in their way: the Jordan River.
They had heard about this land their whole lives. But not one of them had ever walked the road into it. So God gave them a simple instruction.
"When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the Levitical priests carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before." (Joshua 3:3-4)
Notice what God did not give them. No map. No five-year plan. No step by step explanation of what was on the other side.
He gave them His presence, and He told them to follow it.
Beautiful soul, maybe you are standing at the edge of something you have never done before. A new chapter, a new role, a new way of living after a long wilderness. You do not need to know the whole road. You only need to keep your eyes on the One going ahead of you.
Keep It in Sight
There was one more detail in God's instruction. The people were told to keep a distance of about two thousand cubits from the ark. That is nearly half a mile.
At first that might sound strange. Why stay so far back?
Because from that distance, everyone could see it. Not just the people in the front. The families in the back, the children, the elderly, the ones who were tired. Every single person could look up and see where God was leading.
Following God is not about pushing your way to the front. It is about keeping Him in sight. When you lose track of His presence, every path looks confusing. When you keep your eyes on Him, the way becomes clear, one step at a time.
Feet in the Water
Now here is the part that takes real faith.
The river did not part when the priests prayed about it. It did not part when they reached the bank. It parted when their feet touched the water.
"Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away." (Joshua 3:15-16)
Flood stage. This was not a gentle stream. It was the river at its most dangerous. And God asked them to step in anyway.
So often we wait for the water to move before we take the step. But God often moves the water after we do. The miracle was waiting on the other side of obedience.
And then the priests did something beautiful. They stood in the middle of the riverbed, holding the ark, until every last person had crossed. God's presence stayed in the place of danger until everyone was safe.
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you." (Isaiah 43:2)
The Day the Manna Stopped
Do you remember Monday, beautiful soul? We gathered manna together. Fresh every morning, just enough for today.
After Israel crossed the Jordan, something happened that is easy to miss.
"The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that same year they ate the produce of Canaan." (Joshua 5:12)
For forty years, manna had never missed a morning. And then one day, it simply stopped.
Not because God stopped providing. Because a new season of provision had begun. The bread from heaven gave way to the harvest of the land.
Sometimes the end of something familiar is not a loss. It is a sign that you have crossed over. God's provision does not disappear. It changes shape for the season you are walking into.
Your Follow Friday Practice
This week, follow His presence into new ground:
- Find the ark. Name one place you sense God leading you that you have never been before.
- Keep it in sight. Set one daily reminder to pause, pray, and look for where He is going.
- Step into the water. Take one small step of obedience before you see the path open.
Then watch for the water to move.
Note from Eugenia
Beautiful soul, you have never been this way before. That is okay. Neither had they. God did not ask Israel to know the road. He asked them to follow Him on it. Keep His presence in front of you, take the first step, and trust that He will stand in the middle of every river until you are safely across.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

Frequency Feature: "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls
Beautiful soul, today we followed the ark, the sign of God's presence going ahead of His people into a land they had never seen. And this song tells a story that echoes something even greater.
"Iris" was written for the 1998 film City of Angels, about an angel who gives up forever just to be close to the one he loves. John Rzeznik wrote it in a hotel room during one of the hardest seasons of his life. He said he kept thinking about what an amazing thing it must be to love someone so much that you would give up everything to be with them.
Hollywood told that story as a romance. But heaven told it first.
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14)
The presence that once traveled in a golden ark stepped into our world in Jesus. He left heaven, walked our roads, and felt everything we feel. And He did not come just to be seen. He came to know you completely, and to be known by you.
That is why today's Frequency Feature is "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls, a song that is somehow back in the Top 10 of the streaming charts, 28 years after it was released. Let it remind you that you are not walking into your new season alone. The One who gave up everything to be close to you is already going ahead of you.
