Sunday Soul Food: Let Truth and Light Guide You

This Sunday Soul Food is a call to sharpen your discernment. In a world of smooth words and blurred lines, learn to see beyond appearances, name good and evil clearly, and let God’s truth and love light the path for your week ahead.

Sunday Soul Food: Let Truth and Light Guide You
At a fork in the road, he pauses before a glowing cross-shaped light, choosing to let God’s truth expose what is good and evil and trusting the Spirit to guide his next step.

“You don’t have to read every mind, but you do have to test every spirit.”

In a world full of polished captions, curated personas, and carefully chosen words, it is easy to forget that not everything that sounds right is rooted in Truth. Smooth talk does not equal a pure heart. Spiritual maturity is not just about knowing verses; it is about allowing God to train your discernment so you can see beyond words and recognize what is truly good and what is truly evil.

Discernment is not suspicion. It is not living in constant paranoia, assuming the worst about everyone you meet. Discernment is the Holy Spirit teaching you to see with God’s eyes - so you are not easily flattered, manipulated, or swayed. It is learning to pause and ask, “What is the spirit behind this? Does it align with the character of Christ, or is something off?” Scripture urges us, “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” [1 John 4:1]

Beyond the Surface of Words

Words can be beautiful, but they can also be weapons or disguises. Jesus warned us that there would be people who look harmless on the outside yet are dangerous on the inside: “They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” [Matthew 7:15] That warning did not end with the early church; it is pressing and relevant today.

This is why you cannot live by surface impressions alone. Not every “I’m praying for you” is rooted in love. Not every “I want what’s best for you” is honest. Not every “Christian” label reflects a heart surrendered to Christ. Discernment notices when words and fruit do not match. Jesus told us that you will recognize people “by their fruit” - by the consistent pattern of their lives, not by a single quote or moment. [Matthew 7:16–20]

Ask yourself:

  • Does this person’s life consistently reflect humility, repentance, and love?
  • Or do their words sound right while their actions leave a trail of confusion, fear, and compromise?

This applies to people, opportunities, teachings, and even your own inner thoughts. Not every thought that passes through your mind comes from God. Discernment allows you to hold thoughts up to the light and ask, “Does this sound like my Shepherd or like a thief?” [John 10:10–11]

Good or Evil: No Blurred Lines

We live in a culture that loves the gray areas - “your truth,” “my truth,” and a thousand ways to justify what we already want. But spiritually, there is a sobering reality: things are either aligned with God’s heart (good) or they are opposed to Him (evil). There is no neutral ground where sin becomes okay because it is popular, convenient, or emotionally understandable.

Light and darkness do not blend; they battle. Scripture is clear: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness.” [Isaiah 5:20] When you allow your moral judgment to be softened by pressure, sentiment, or fear of rejection, you step into dangerous territory. You begin to excuse what God has clearly named as harmful.

This does not mean becoming harsh, rigid, or unkind. It means refusing to trade Truth for comfort. It means letting God’s Word - not the loudest voice in the room - define what is good, pure, and right. “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” [Psalm 119:130] Truth is not a concept; it is a Person. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” [John 14:6]

If you want clear discernment, you must refuse to blur the line between good and evil in your own life. Confession sharpens discernment. Compromise dulls it.

Standing on Truth and Love

Some people stand on “truth” but have forgotten love. Others cling to “love” but quietly let go of truth. The kingdom way is both - unshakable truth expressed through undeniable love. Scripture calls us to “speak the truth in love,” so that we grow up into Christ instead of staying spiritually immature. [Ephesians 4:15]

Standing on truth without love turns you into a judge and jury. Standing on love without truth turns you into a doormat. Standing on both makes you a light. When you are rooted in Christ, you can say:

  • “I will not agree with evil, even if it costs me approval.”
  • “I will not stop loving people, even if I cannot affirm their choices.”
  • “I will let God’s Word be my standard, my mirror, and my anchor.”

Let this be your Sunday Soul Food: you are called to be a person of both clarity and compassion - clear about what is good and evil, compassionate toward the people still caught in confusion.

Training Your Discernment

Discernment does not arrive overnight. It is cultivated. Hebrews tells us that spiritual maturity comes when, “by constant use,” we train ourselves “to distinguish good from evil.” [Hebrews 5:14] That means you grow in discernment every time you choose to slow down and invite God into your decisions instead of reacting automatically.

Here are three simple ways to practice:

  1. Pause before you agree.
When someone says something that sounds good, ask the Holy Spirit quietly, “Is this from You?” Pay attention to the peace or unrest in your spirit. God is not the author of confusion; when something is from Him, it may challenge you, but it will not twist you. [1 Corinthians 14:33]
  2. Measure everything against Scripture.
Feelings are real, but they are not final. Before you accept a message, belief, or invitation, ask, “Does this line up with the heart and Word of God?” His Word is the lamp to your feet and the light to your path. [Psalm 119:105]
  3. Watch for fruit over time.
Don’t rush to judgment, but don’t ignore patterns. Is this relationship, teaching, or opportunity producing peace, righteousness, and deeper love for God - or confusion, compromise, and chaos? The Holy Spirit will consistently lead you into truth, not away from it. [John 16:13]

With practice, you will become more fluent in the language of the Spirit. You will start to sense when something is off long before it explodes. You will recognize when a door is from God and when it is a trap dressed up as a blessing.

A Prayer for Discernment

Lord,
In a world of loud words and blurred lines,
teach me to see with Your eyes.
I don’t want to live naïve,
taking everything at face value,
nor do I want to live suspicious and hard.

Give me a heart that loves truth
and a spirit that moves in love.
Train my discernment so I can recognize
what is truly good and what is truly evil.
Where I have called darkness “not that bad,”
correct me.
Where I have used truth as a weapon
instead of a light, forgive me.

Light my path with Your Word.
Guard my mind from deception,
my heart from compromise,
and my steps from any road
that leads away from You.

Let Your truth anchor me
and Your love flow through me,
so that in every person and every situation,
I follow Your Spirit more than my feelings
and stand firm in what is right,
even when it costs me.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

As you step into this new week, remember: you may not be able to control what people say, but you can choose what you believe. Stand on Truth. Move in Love. Let God’s light expose what needs exposing and confirm what is from Him, and you will find your feet steady - even when the world is not.

With love and sacred rhythm,

The Pink Panther theme brings a playful, sneaky energy that actually fits this week’s focus on discernment. Its mischievous feel mirrors how deception often moves quietly in the background - smooth, charming, and easy to overlook if you are not paying attention.

As that familiar melody slinks along, let it remind you that not everything is as innocent as it first appears, and that walking with God means staying spiritually alert even in lighthearted moments. Just like the Pink Panther is always being watched closely, you are invited to watch closely too - testing words, motives, and opportunities, and letting Truth and Love be the lens that exposes what is really going on.
