Sunday Soul Food: When Your Past Isn’t Your Fault, But Your Healing Is Sacred
This Sunday Soul Food reminds you that your past isn’t your fault, but your healing is sacred. Learn how to transmute painful emotions with God, release the need for revenge, and build simple body–mind–soul rhythms that ground your week in peace and purpose.
"You are not responsible for what wounded you, but you are invited to partner with God in how you heal."
When You Were Defenseless
There are chapters of our stories where we were completely defenseless - too young, too small, or too dependent to protect ourselves. In those seasons, we were at the mercy of parents, family, and the adults in the room to keep us safe. Some did that beautifully. Some did not.
If you carry trauma from childhood because the people around you did not protect or care for you the way they should have, you need to know this: you are not alone, and what happened to you does not define who you are today. Your nervous system may still remember those moments, but your identity is rooted in a God who calls you chosen, loved, and guarded.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
“Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.”
Psalm 27:10 (NIV)
Re-framing Regret and Transmuting Emotion
When pain and regret pile up, it is easy to believe that your story is ruined. But with God, regret can become raw material, and your emotions can be transmuted into fuel for growth instead of weapons against yourself. The anger, grief, and confusion you feel are not proof that you are broken beyond repair; they are signals pointing to where healing is needed and where God wants to meet you.
Transmuting emotion looks like taking what was meant to crush you and, with the Holy Spirit’s help, letting it push you toward your highest, healthiest self. Instead of stuffing feelings or letting them explode, you bring them into God’s presence -journaling, praying, crying, moving your body - and allow Him to reshape that energy into clarity, wisdom, and compassion.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Romans 8:28 (NIV)
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3 (NIV)
You Were Hurt, but You Are Not the Problem
One of the gentlest truths you can accept is this: you were hurt, but you are not the problem. Many of the people who harmed you - emotionally, physically, spiritually - were acting out of their own unhealed wounds, sickness, and brokenness. That does not excuse their behavior, but it does relocate the blame off your shoulders.
People who abuse, neglect, manipulate, or betray often need deep help and healing themselves. Their choices say far more about the state of their own souls than they do about your worth. You are allowed to step out of the role of “the problem” and recognize that what happened to you reflected their sickness, not your value.
“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.”
Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)
God Keeps the Books, Not You
The energy we bring into this world comes at a cost. Harmful words and actions are not free; they sow seeds that one day must be accounted for. But here is the relief: it is not your responsibility to make sure every soul “pays up.” You are not the Judge, the avenger, or the collection agency for anyone’s consequences. That role belongs to God alone.
You can rest in knowing that God sees every injustice, every betrayal, and every wound that was dismissed or minimized. He is perfect in justice and mercy, and He knows exactly how to handle the people who hurt you. Your job is not to obsess over their payback; your sacred assignment is to focus on your healing and your transformation.
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord.”
Romans 12:19 (NIV)
Not Everything in Your Life Is Your Fault
One of the most freeing realizations you can carry into a new week is this: not everything in your life is your fault. Some of your anxiety, triggers, or patterns were shaped by environments you did not choose and dynamics you could not control. You were doing the best you could with what you had at the time.
But here is the shift - while it may not be your fault, your healing is now a sacred invitation. Once you see what is not yours to carry in shame, you can partner with God to decide what happens next. You can stop blaming yourself for what formed you and start allowing the Holy Spirit to transform you.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Crafting a Sacred Rhythm for Body, Mind, and Soul
When you accept that not every broken piece is your fault and that God is handling the justice side, you can start building a gentle, sacred rhythm that honors your body, mind, and soul instead of punishing them. Think of it as weekly “soul food” that keeps you grounded:
- For your body: Simple habits like drinking water, moving your body, and protecting your sleep are not vanity - they are stewardship. Your body has carried you through more than anyone knows; caring for it is a way of saying, “Thank you.”
- For your mind: Limit what has access to your thoughts. Curate your inputs -Scripture, worship, helpful books, healthy conversations - so your mind is not constantly marinating in fear, comparison, or chaos.
- For your soul: Make space for God’s presence through prayer, worship, and silence. Your soul needs quiet moments where you are not performing, fixing, or scrolling - just being held.
These are not separate boxes; they are braided together. A rested body helps a calmer mind. A calmer mind makes it easier to sense God’s voice. And a soul anchored in God empowers you to make kinder choices for your body and mind.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
Matthew 22:37 (NIV)
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit…you are not your own; you were bought at a price.”
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NIV)
A Sunday Soul Food Practice for This Week
To ground your week ahead, try this simple, gentle practice today:
- Name it: Write down one thing from your past that was not your fault but still feels heavy.
- Feel and transmute: Sit with the emotion that surfaces - anger, sadness, fear - and talk to God about it. Ask Him to turn that energy into wisdom, courage, or compassion instead of self-hatred.
- Release it: Pray, “Jesus, I give this memory and the weight of it back to You. Show me how You see me here, and handle what I cannot.”
- Replace it: Choose one small, sacred rhythm to practice this week for your body, one for your mind, and one for your soul. Keep them simple and realistic.
- Repeat it: Revisit this list next Sunday and celebrate any baby steps you took, no matter how small.
As you step into this new week, may you feel released from the weight of what was never yours to carry and strengthened to steward what is. Your story is still being written, and the Author of your life has not put down His pen. May His peace guard your heart, His wisdom guide your choices, and His love gently lead you along your own sacred healing path - one intentional rhythm, one redeemed emotion, and one small act of faith at a time.
"You are not the sum of what was done to you; you are the beloved of God, learning new rhythms one gentle step at a time."
With love and sacred rhythm,

🎧 Frequency Feature: The Battles The Lords
“The Battle’s The Lord’s” by Street Gospel Syndicate is a perfect sonic echo of this week’s Sunday Soul Food. The song reminds us that the deep fights of our lives -justice, vindication, and unseen spiritual warfare - do not rest on our shoulders alone. In the same way this blog releases you from trying to make every soul “pay up,” the track underscores that God is the One who carries the real weight of the battle while you focus on healing and walking in your sacred rhythms. Let it be a reminder, as you listen, that your job is not to fight dirty in your own strength, but to bring your pain, emotions, and story to the One who has already promised to fight for you.
