Surprise Sunday: When We Finally Stop Digging

Surprise Sunday is about the moment you stop digging the hole you’re standing in and choose a future your children can be proud of. You can walk away from division, heal, and rise to a frequency no illusion can touch.

Surprise Sunday: When We Finally Stop Digging
Surprise Sunday – a person standing in a self‑dug hole at sunset, gently setting down the shovel and looking up toward a new future.

Beautiful Souls,

There’s a hard truth about America that I think most of us know in our bones:

This country was never going to be taken down by a foreign power first.
If we ever lose what makes us us, it will be because we slowly handed it away from the inside.

Jesus said it plainly:

“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.”
- Matthew 12:25

Our greatest threat doesn’t come from a distant world.
It comes from what we choose to tolerate, normalize, and participate in right here - in our homes, our communities, our feeds, and our hearts.

And that means something uncomfortable and holy:

The future our children inherit is not inevitable.
It is the direct result of what we do and refuse to do today.

Eating your “shit sandwiches” without letting them eat you

I’ve had my fair share of what I call “shit sandwiches” - seasons where the circumstances were humiliating, unfair, and shaped by other people’s illusions and narratives.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • You don’t get to control whether life hands you something bitter.
  • You do get to decide whether it becomes compost for your character or poison for your soul.

Scripture tells us that people often fall into the very pit they dig for others:

“He made a pit and dug it out, and has fallen into the ditch which he made.”
- Psalm 7:15

We live in a world where coordinated groups can cast illusions over many, spinning stories to keep their narrative afloat, even if it means sacrificing other people’s humanity along the way. Trust me - they will take your life if it means protecting their lackluster decisions - allegedly.

If you’re not careful, you start eating their version of you.
You start accepting their story as your identity.

America of the future cannot afford a generation that gives its soul away to someone else’s illusion.
We need people whose character has been shaped by hard things - but not defined by them.

Grandpa Timmons and the first rule of the hole

My Grandpa Timmons gave me a piece of wisdom that will live with me for lifetimes.

During the period when my Uncle Jeff went missing circa 1998, life felt like a raw, open wound.
In the middle of that pain, my grandpa said something simple:

“If you find yourself in a hole of your own making, the first thing you need to do is stop digging.”

The Bible has its own way of saying this: repentance is turning, not tunneling deeper.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
- 1 John 1:9

Some people hear “stop digging” and feel shame.
I hear mercy.

Because “stop digging” is not a condemnation, it’s an invitation:

  • To stop defending what’s hurting you.
  • To stop cooperating with what is killing your peace.
  • To stop believing that you have to keep going in the wrong direction just because that’s the story people expect.

Surprise Sunday, for me, is a pause on the shovel.
A moment to look around and say, “Is this really the hole I want my grandchildren to find themselves in?”

Choosing to remember where the Love was real

I have been lied on, steered wrong, watched, misunderstood, and treated like an object in someone else’s plot.
There are parts of my story and my struggles that I have never discussed and may never have to.

But I made an intentional decision about how I would remember my life:

I focus on the times when the Love was real.

  • The quiet ways I showed up for people.
  • The moments I brought love into rooms that only expected performance or compliance.
  • The days I chose kindness even while I was bleeding on the inside.

No illusion anyone casts over me can erase the truth of how I loved.

Scripture describes Love like this:

“Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

That’s the America I want for the future:

A country where our identity is rooted not in how loudly we perform outrage,
but in how faithfully we show up in love - even when no one is clapping.

You don’t have to join the hate campaign

The America of the future has to understand something simple and radical:

You don’t have to willingly participate in hate and division.

You can:

  • Walk in the other direction.
  • Log off instead of amplifying a lie.
  • Refuse to turn another human being into a caricature or a target.
  • Choose to be the one person in the room who won’t weaponize someone’s pain.

And yes, when you do that, you might be:

  • Lied on.
  • Used.
  • Abused.
  • Sold.
  • Watched.
  • Abandoned.

Jesus warned us that following Him wouldn’t always look like applause:

“Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake.”
- Luke 6:22

Evil does not reward people who stop cooperating with it.
But your soul does.

When you learn to heal through intentional humiliation and trauma, your frequency changes.
You rise to a level that can’t be faked, bought, or manufactured.

Your presence starts to communicate what needs to be known without you having to say a word.

Jesus put it this way:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
- Matthew 5:16

The frequency of the America I see

The America I envision for our children and our children’s children is not perfect.
It is healed enough to tell the truth.

It understands that:

  • Our greatest danger is not “them,” but what we allow ourselves to become.
  • Our greatest calling is to build a future we can look our grandchildren in the eyes about.
  • Our greatest power is choosing Love when division would be more profitable.

Scripture says:

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
- Proverbs 14:34

The future I see is one where:

  • People stop digging holes they can’t climb out of.
  • Communities choose real Love over curated outrage.
  • Survivors of humiliation and trauma stand tall, not as victims, but as living frequencies of what healing looks like.

Surprise Sunday is my reminder that this future doesn’t start in a voting booth or a headline.
It starts in your next decision.

The next time you’re handed another “shit sandwich,” ask:

“Will this feed my bitterness, or will it feed my character?”

The next time you feel the shovel in your hand, ask:

“Is this the hole I want my children to inherit?”

Because whether America is destroyed from within or transformed from within will come down to that:
What we do with the pain we’ve been given, and what we insist on leaving behind for those who come after us.

Frequency Feature:
Today’s frequency is “Hallelujah” by Spiritual Workz - a praise track that feels like standing in the middle of everything you’ve survived and still choosing to lift your voice.

“Hallelujah” is an ancient word that means “praise the Lord,” but in our world it also carries the weight of every broken and honest hallelujah we’ve ever had to sing. This song meets you right there: at the intersection of struggle and surrender, of confusion and clarity, of being lied on or watched or humiliated and still finding a sound that belongs to God and not to the people who tried to break you.
