The Midweek Mirror: Receiving Your Own Advice
This Midweek Mirror explores the art of receiving the encouragement you freely give others. Let your own wisdom guide you with compassion.
We often know exactly what we need to hear, but struggle to listen to our own wisdom. This midweek, let's pause and explore the sacred art of receiving the encouragement we freely give to others.
The Wisdom We Already Carry
Have you noticed how clear your perspective becomes when a friend shares their struggles? Your words flow with compassion and clarity.
Yet, when you're facing your own challenge, that same wisdom feels distant.
Today, the Midweek Mirror asks:
What if the advice you most need to hear is already living within you?
The Mirror of Self-Compassion
In our recent reflection, The Frequency of Faith: Holding Steady When the Noise Returns, we learned how chaos outside can drown out our inner voice. Sometimes, it's not just the noise around us - it's our inner critic, dismissing our own wisdom.
We treat ourselves with a harshness we'd never use on others and silence our inner wisdom with doubt. What if today, you chose to receive your own advice with the same openness you extend to a beloved friend?
Scripture Foundation
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
This isn't permission to trust only yourself, but a reminder that God plants wisdom in us by His Spirit, and sometimes our own gentle counsel is how He speaks.
Becoming Your Own Wise Counselor
Step 1: The Friend Exercise
Think about the challenge weighing on your heart. If your dearest friend brought you this exact situation, what would you tell them?
• What encouragement would you offer?
• What perspective would you share?
• What gentle truth would you speak?
• What hope would you remind them of?
Write down your answers. This is your wisdom speaking.
Step 2: Receive Your Own Words
Read your responses back to yourself - not as advice you're giving, but as wisdom you're receiving. Let these truths settle into your spirit the way you'd let a friend's counsel take root.
If you feel resistance, notice it gently. You are worthy of the grace you'd extend to others.
Step 3: Faith Integration
As explored in The Sacred Exhale: How Faith Becomes Your Daily Anchor, our faith is the foundation for all wisdom.
Ask yourself:
• How does this advice align with what I know of God's character?
• Where do I see His love reflected in my own words?
• How can I trust that He's working through even my human understanding?
Journal Prompts for Deeper Reflection
Morning Reflection:
• What feels overwhelming or unclear right now?
• If my best friend faced this, what three pieces of advice would I offer?
• What blocks me from receiving this same wisdom?
Midday Check-In:
• How am I speaking to myself today? Would I use this tone with a friend?
• What gentle truth do I need?
• Where do I see God's character reflected in my own wisdom?
Evening Integration:
• How can I practice receiving my own wise counsel tomorrow?
• What might change if I treated my inner wisdom as a God-given gift?
• Who models healthy self-compassion, and what can I learn from them?
The Sacred Intersection: Where Self-Wisdom Meets Divine Truth
There's a beautiful space where Spirit-led wisdom meets God's eternal truth.
It's not about trusting yourself over God, but recognizing that He often speaks through the clarity you find when you pause.
As shared in The Whisper to Begin: "Follow Me" in the Ordinary, God speaks in everyday moments - including when we counsel others with His heart.
Living This Truth Forward
This Week's Practice:
• Each morning, ask: What does the wise one within me need to hear today?
• When you notice self-criticism, pause and reframe it: What would I tell a friend?
• Before bed, acknowledge one piece of wisdom you offered yourself.
On Authentic Living:
In Truth Telling Tuesday: Living Authentically in Faith, we learned that honesty with ourselves is the foundation for an authentic life. Part of that authenticity is receiving the wisdom you already carry.
A Prayer for Receiving
Gracious God,
You have woven wisdom into who I am through Your Spirit.
Help me recognize the counsel I carry - not as pride in my own understanding,
but as a gift of Your grace.
When I speak wisdom to others, remind me it's meant for my own heart too.
Amen.
Your Midweek Invitation
You're invited into a radical act of self-compassion:
Listen to your own advice.
The wisdom you share with others? It's yours to receive.
The grace you offer in struggle? You are worthy of it.
The hope you remind others to hold onto? It has your name on it.
What advice do you most need to receive from yourself today?
If this resonates, share your practice in the comments, or take a moment to honor the wise counselor within.
