Truth-Telling Tuesday: Asking the Right Questions
Growth doesn’t always come from finding the right answers, but from asking the right questions - of yourself, of others, and of God.
Today’s Whisper in One Breath
Beautiful souls, every question you plant is a seed. Be brave enough to sow it, patient enough to wait, and faithful enough to harvest the truth it grows. 🌱
Years ago, I had a business partner who walked away with a $300+ million all-cash exit. In one of our conversations, he told me something I’ve never forgotten:
“Dan, when you get to my level, you realize that everything is just about asking the right questions.”
At the time, I didn’t apply that wisdom. I wasn’t ready. But thankfully, we have the gift of memory. Though I missed the lesson in that exact moment, it has taken root in me now, and it’s one of the most valuable truths I carry.
Why Questions Matter
We often think growth is about finding the right answers. But sometimes, the true breakthrough comes when we dare to ask the right questions.
Many people will never freely share their opinion - fear of hurting someone, fear of conflict, fear of being misunderstood. But when you ask, especially when you’re willing to receive an answer you may not like, or maybe you will, you open the door to growth that would otherwise remain shut.
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7)
Sharpening the Axe
Yesterday, I had a sales call with my boss present. Afterward, I faced a choice: Do I ask him directly for feedback, knowing it might sting? Or do I play it safe and move on?
I chose to ask. His response? I’m too nice.
And he was right. I’ve known it. For years, I lived outside of alignment, away from my baseline. My mind and body have gotten sharper, but sharpening only comes through pressure. You must be willing to make yourself uncomfortable if you want to grow.
"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)
The truth is, “being too nice” can be both a strength and a weakness. You don’t have to be mean, but when your presence enters a room, it should be clear whose energy is setting the tone. The beauty is - we get to decide how to frame it. There’s always truth in both perspectives.
The Practice of Asking
Asking hard questions is only half the work. The other half is being okay with whatever answer you receive.
I know my downfalls. I know where my axe needs sharpening. It’s like tuning a radio - sometimes you hit static, but with patience, you find the clear signal. Constructive criticism is part of that tuning process.
Tomorrow, I’ll have another call with my other boss. I’ll be paying close attention -not only to his feedback, but also to the frequency I carry into the conversation. Will I be sharper, more aligned, more rooted in presence? That’s the daily work -refining, adjusting, sharpening.
The great thing about frequency is that it’s familiar. I’ve tuned into that station before. I already know what it feels like. Today I walk in sharper than I did yesterday - simply because I asked the right question.
"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41)
Layers of Questions
The truth is, questions must be asked in three directions:
- Of yourself - Where am I holding back? Where am I drifting from presence?
- Of others - What do you see in me that I may not see in myself?
- Of God - Lord, what are You asking me to learn in this season?
Not every question will be comfortable, but every question has the power to realign you, and sometimes, to change the course of your life.
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5)
The Invitation
Ask the hard questions, my friends. Then make the changes. Then ask again.
Repeat this process, over and over, and you will succeed. You can only fail if you give up. And you will never look back with regret for choosing to get better.
"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)
With love and truth,
