Truth Telling Tuesday: It Is Written

When the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness, He answered with a verse about manna. This Truth Telling Tuesday explores how Jesus fought lies with "It is written," why the belt of truth comes first, and how to answer every lie you hear.

Truth Telling Tuesday: It Is Written
The enemy speaks in lies. Answer him in truth.
Whisper: The enemy speaks in lies. Answer him in truth.

Good morning, beautiful soul.

Yesterday we went out into the wilderness and gathered manna. We learned that grace comes fresh every morning, just enough for today.

But here is something most people never notice. Centuries later, Jesus stood in a wilderness of His own, face to face with the enemy. And when the battle began, He answered with a verse about manna.

Today, let's look at how Jesus fought the devil. Because He showed us exactly how to win.

Hungry in the Wilderness

Right after His baptism, Jesus was led into the desert.

"Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry." (Matthew 4:1-2)

Notice when the enemy showed up. Not on day one, when Jesus was strong. On day forty, when He was weak, tired, and starving.

That is still how the enemy works. He waits for the long week, the sleepless night, the moment you are running on empty. Then he whispers.

And listen to the first words he said: "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

If you are. Just days earlier, at the Jordan River, the Father had spoken from heaven: "This is my Son, whom I love." Now the enemy was trying to make Jesus question what God had already said. The first attack was not on His stomach. It was on His identity.

The Manna Answer

Jesus did not argue. He did not explain Himself or try to prove anything. He simply answered:

"Jesus answered, 'It is written: "Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."'" (Matthew 4:4)

Here is the beautiful part, beautiful soul. Jesus was quoting Moses. And Moses was talking about the manna.

"He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." (Deuteronomy 8:3)

The manna was never only about breakfast. God was teaching His people that real life comes from His voice. So when Jesus was hungry in the wilderness, He reached for the lesson of the wilderness. And that was only the first round.

Where Israel Stumbled, Jesus Stood

The devil tried two more times. He told Jesus to throw Himself from the top of the temple. Then he offered Him every kingdom in the world in exchange for worship.

Each time, Jesus answered with "It is written." And each time, He quoted the same book: Deuteronomy, the book of lessons Israel learned in the wilderness.

"Jesus answered him, 'It is also written: "Do not put the Lord your God to the test." (Matthew 4:7)

That is no accident, beautiful soul. Israel spent forty years in the wilderness and stumbled over the same tests. They grumbled when they were hungry. They tested God at Massah. They bowed to a golden calf.

Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness and passed every test they failed. Where they stumbled, He stood. And He stood on the very truths they had been given.

The Father of Lies

Why did Jesus answer with scripture instead of a debate? Because He knew exactly who He was talking to.

"When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44)

Lying is the enemy's native language. He does not usually show up with horns and pitchforks. He shows up with a sentence.

You will never get through this. God forgot about you. You are too far gone. They were right about you.

Those lies sound convincing when you are tired and hungry. But a lie cannot stand in the presence of truth. Truth is not a feeling you have to work up. It is what God has already said.

Buckle the Belt First

When Paul described the armor of God, he listed the belt first.

"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place." (Ephesians 6:14)

That order matters. A Roman soldier's belt held his tunic in place and carried the weight of his sword. Without the belt, everything else would loosen or slip.

The same is true for us. When we believe a lie, our peace slips. Our confidence slips. Our faith starts to feel loose. But when we buckle truth around us first, everything else stays in place.

So the next time a lie shows up, do what Jesus did. Do not debate it. Answer it.

"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)

Your Truth Telling Practice

This week, buckle your belt of truth:

  1. Name the lie. Write down one lie that keeps showing up in your thoughts.
  2. Find the verse. Look for one scripture that answers it directly.
  3. Speak it out loud. Start with "It is written," and say the verse every time the lie returns.

The lie may come back. So will your answer.

Note from Eugenia

Beautiful soul, you do not have to win an argument with the enemy. You only have to stand on what God already said. If Jesus answered with scripture when He was hungry and alone in the desert, you can too. Buckle the truth around you this morning, and let it hold everything else in place.

"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32)

Frequency Feature: "The Battle" by REDEEMED

Beautiful soul, some mornings you wake up feeling broken. Other mornings you wake up feeling chosen. And some mornings you honestly cannot tell which voice to believe.

That is exactly where the battle happens. Not out there somewhere, but in the space between the lie and the truth.

This song puts that battle into words. It begins with an honest prayer from someone who feels broken, picks up burdens they already laid down, and sometimes lets the devil come knocking. Then the song turns, and God answers back. He already knew. He knew you would feel weak. He knew you would stumble. And He still says the same thing over you: the victory is yours, and the battle is already won.

That is what Jesus did in the wilderness. When the lie came, He answered with what the Father had already spoken. This song does the same. The lie says broken. The truth says chosen.

"But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:57)

That is why today's Frequency Feature is "The Battle" by REDEEMED, a Christian single released in March 2025 and written by Joshua Richards. Play it the next time a lie shows up before breakfast. Then answer it the way the song does, with the truth God has already spoken over you.
