Truth Telling Tuesday: "Stop Lying to Yourself"
The hardest person you'll ever have to be honest with is yourself. You can't become who God is calling you to be while believing lies about where you are. Truth-telling starts within. Name the lie you've been believing, replace it with God's truth, and take one honest action today. 🙏
Opening Truth
Beautiful souls, let's get real for a moment. The hardest person you'll ever have to be honest with isn't your boss, your partner, or your family - it's yourself.
We've become experts at telling ourselves convenient lies: "I'm fine." "It doesn't bother me." "I'll deal with it later." "I'm not ready yet." "They need me to stay small."
But here's the truth you need to hear today: You can't become who God is calling you to be while believing lies about where you are.
Truth-telling starts within. And it starts now.
Scripture: Jeremiah 17:9-10 - "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds." (link)
The Lies We Tell Ourselves
Self-deception is subtle. It doesn't announce itself. It whispers justifications, excuses, and comfort when what you really need is courage.
Ask yourself these hard questions:
- Are you telling yourself you're "fine" when deep down, you're drowning?
- Are you avoiding a complicated conversation because confrontation feels uncomfortable?
- Are you settling for less than you deserve because you're afraid to want more?
- Are you staying in patterns that no longer serve you simply because they're familiar?
- Are you dimming your light to make others comfortable?
Beautiful souls, the lies we tell ourselves keep us stuck. They keep us from our purpose, our peace, and our power. And the enemy loves it when we live in denial, because a person who won't face the truth can never walk in freedom.
Scripture: John 8:32 - "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (link)
Freedom begins with honesty.
Why Truth Telling Matters
Let me be clear: truth-telling isn't about being harsh with yourself. It's not about shame or condemnation. It's about alignment. It's about bringing your thoughts, your words, and your actions into harmony with who God says you are and where He's calling you.
When you stop lying to yourself, you create space for real growth. You stop wasting energy maintaining false narratives. You stop pretending everything is okay when it's not. And you finally permit God to work in the areas you've been hiding.
Truth-telling is an act of self-respect. It says, "I deserve to live in reality, not illusion." It says, "I'm strong enough to face what is, so I can step into what's next."
And here's what I've learned on my own journey: the breakthrough you're praying for is on the other side of the truth you're avoiding.
Scripture: Psalm 51:6 - "Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart." (link)
God honors honesty even when it's messy. Even when it's uncomfortable. Even when it reveals how far you still have to go.
Get Brutally Honest - With Love
So how do you start? How do you break the cycle of self-deception?
1. Create space for self-reflection.
You can't hear the truth if you're constantly drowning it out with noise, busyness, or distraction. Sit with yourself. Journal. Pray. Ask God to reveal what you've been avoiding.
Scripture: Psalm 139:23-24 - "Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!" (link)
2. Name the lie you've been believing.
Write it down. Say it out loud. "I've been telling myself that I'm not good enough." "I've been pretending this situation doesn't hurt me." "I've been lying about being okay with where I am."
3. Replace the lie with God's truth.
For every lie, there's a truth. For every fear, there's a promise. For every excuse, there's an invitation to grow.
- Lie: "I'm not ready."
Truth: "God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called." - Lie: "I have to stay small to keep the peace."
Truth: "Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16 - link) - Lie: "I've messed up too much to start over."
Truth: "His mercies are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:22-23 - link)
4. Take one honest action today.
Truth-telling isn't just internal - it requires action. Have the conversation you've been avoiding. Set the boundary you've been too scared to set. Admit you need help. Stop pretending everything is fine when it's not.
Your best life is always on the other side of a tough conversation - and sometimes that conversation is with yourself.
Closing Truth
Beautiful souls,
Today, I'm permitting you to stop pretending. Stop lying to yourself about where you are, what you need, or what you're capable of.
The truth might sting at first, but it will also set you free. "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)
God can handle your honesty. He's not shocked by your struggles, your doubts, or your mess. He's been waiting for you to bring them into the light so He can meet you there.
So take a deep breath. Get honest with yourself. And watch how truth-telling becomes the first step toward the breakthrough you've been praying for.
Scripture: Ephesians 4:25 - "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another." (link)
Pause, breathe, and speak the truth - first to yourself, then to God, and finally to those who need to hear it.
You are held. You are becoming. And the truth will lead you home.
With love,
Eugene 💘
