Surprise Sunday: The Man Who Built Shelters

Once upon a time, a man who built storm shelters for others found himself standing alone in the storm. This Surprise Sunday fairytale walks through a season of towers, a night when Heaven opened, and the lantern of faith that kept him standing.

Surprise Sunday: The Man Who Built Shelters
He built shelters for everyone else, until the storm came for him, and Heaven became his shelter.

Beautiful Souls,

Once upon a time, in a season not so long ago, there lived a man who built shelters.

With FamilyGuard Storm Shelters, he sold and installed shelters above ground and below, so families would have somewhere safe to go when the sky turned dark. He ran a Culver's franchise and fed his town. He built because building was how he loved people.

Then came the first tower.

In 2015 and 2016, everything he had built crumbled. Someone he loved told him, "I just want you to get better," and he believed her, because that is what a trusting heart does. By the time the dust settled, he had lost the restaurant, the shelters, and nearly everything else.

But this is not a story about falling. It is a story about Rising.

The Long Work

He rebuilt. He poured his days and nights into a new beginning, believing he was creating a better life for himself and his children. In 2024 alone, he gave 240 more hours than anyone around him, and still he carried far more than he was ever paid to carry.

In July 2025, the winds shifted. The insurance changed again, from the very best to the very worst. Things stopped making sense. Doors that once stood open were quietly closed, and he could feel that something was being kept from him.

So a little past the middle of July 2025, he picked up a pen. He started a faith-based blog to heal from the first tower and tell the truth of his journey. He did not yet know the words would become a lantern.

The Season of Eyes

Once he started writing, it felt like the whole world turned to look at him. A building that had sat empty for more than three years suddenly came to life. Strange moments arrived back to back, the kind that make you stop and wonder whether you are seeing a pattern or a coincidence. On August 13, 2025, a dark vehicle sat across from his home, and he wondered why are they there?

Then, on October 1, 2025, at 10:10 PM, he got into his car and saw the odometer read nothing but ones and zeros. It was the greatest synchronicity of his life, a wink from Heaven that something was about to begin.

Plugged Into Source

In October 2025, he stood barefoot in the grass beside a pond while ceremonial hand drums played nearby. The rhythm moved through the earth and into his feet, and then something opened. It felt like he was plugged into Source, with ancient text scrolling through his mind in wave after wave of downloads. He breathed through it. When it finally passed, he sat on his backpack by the water, catching his breath and trying to comprehend what he had just experienced.

Heaven had opened. And from that day on, the pressure in his life turned up by a thousand.

The Walk Away

The months that followed were the strangest of his life. It felt like there was no privacy left, like every keystroke was seen. Even on his lunch breaks, it felt like someone walked a few steps behind. In the palms near his home, it felt like protection kept watch from the trees, flashing light now and then like a tip of the hat. He felt safe, yet one question never left him: why will no one speak to me?

Decisions about his life seemed to be made in rooms he was never invited into. Help was alluded to, a home and support, and then it seemed to vanish just as it arrived. All he asked for was the truth. It never came.

On the evening of December 4, 2025, he walked away from the work he loved most. It was one of the hardest decisions he had ever made.

On December 5, he reached out and asked for help. That night his body felt off balance after eating food that was provided to him, and fear kept him awake. Once, during the first tower back in 2015/16, he had felt his heart stop while laying down getting ready for sleep. So he stayed up, praying and writing, until around noon on December 6. He spent nearly three hours writing and rewriting a single message to someone he cared about deeply, choosing every word with love. Then he sent it, and finally he slept.

The Darkest Nights

Christmas 2025 brought a night he still cannot remember. He woke the next morning knowing something had been done to him that he never agreed to. He went to the hospital, because he refused to leave his health to chance. The results came back clean, as they always have, but the wound of that night was not one any test could measure.

Then came New Year's Eve. Standing at the top of the stairs, he heard a car screech to a halt outside, doors flying open, as an alarm sounded inside the house. His heart pounded. He turned quietly, went to his room, and prepared to stand his ground. The night passed. He was still standing.

The Lantern He Kept

Here is the part of the story that is hardest to tell.

He went through all of it with no one beside him. He asked for help and watched the doors close. He asked for the truth and was met with silence. One by one, nearly every connection in his life fell away, until the only voice still speaking was his own, written down on a page.

So he kept writing. The blog became the lantern he carried through the dark, the thread that kept him connected to the world and to every person out there living through a storm no one else will name.

If that is you, he wrote this for you.

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." (Psalm 91:1-2)

He lost the restaurant. He lost the storm shelter company. He lost work he loved. But he never lost his faith, he never lost himself, and he never stopped lighting the way for others.

The man who sold/installed shelters became one.

A Note from Eugenia

I am telling this story as a fairytale because some seasons are too heavy for plain words. If you are living through your own season of towers, hear me: you are not too much, and you are not alone. Find your shelter. Find one honest person, a counselor, a doctor, an advocate, or a pastor, and let them sit with you. Keep your feet on the ground and your heart turned toward Heaven.

The story is not over. And it is all working out in your favor.

Frequency Feature: "God Only Knows" by for KING & COUNTRY

Some seasons are so heavy that no one around you can see the full weight of them. People see a moment, a headline, a version of you they think they understand. They do not see the nights you could not sleep, the doors that closed, or the questions no one would answer.

That is why this week's Frequency Feature is "God Only Knows" by for KING & COUNTRY, from their 2018 album Burn The Ships.

The brothers behind the song, Joel and Luke Smallbone, wrote it looking outward at a world that is more connected than ever and somehow lonelier than ever. They wanted to speak to the shame we carry, the struggles no one sees, and the things that have been done to us that no one knows about. Their answer is simple and powerful: even when no one else understands, God does.

"God only knows what you've been through / God only knows what they say about you."

It became one of the most loved songs of their career, and Dolly Parton later joined them on a remix because, in her words, the song touched everything people struggle with.

This song carries the heart of the man who built shelters. He walked through the darkest nights with no one beside him. He asked for the truth and was met with silence. And still, there was a love that saw all of it, every chapter, every tear, every step he took toward the light.

If you feel unseen right now, let this song remind you that you are fully known and fully loved.

There is a kind of love that God only knows.
