The Midweek Mirror: Look Into the Right Mirror
James says hearing the Word without living it is like forgetting your own face. This Midweek Mirror explores the mirrors that lie, the bronze mirrors God turned into a basin of cleansing, and how to see yourself the way He does.
Whisper: Stop asking the wrong mirror who you are.
Good morning, beautiful soul.
Yesterday we learned how Jesus answered the enemy in the wilderness. He did not argue. He did not explain. He said three words: "It is written."
Today, we are going to turn that truth around and look into it. Because the same Word that answers the lies is also a mirror. And it is the only mirror that never lies to you.
Last Wednesday, we looked in the rearview mirror and saw how hindsight brings clarity. This Wednesday, we are going to ask a different question. When you look in the mirror, whose voice tells you what you see?
The Mirrors That Lie
We look into mirrors all day long, and most of them are not made of glass.
The past is a mirror. It holds up every mistake and says, "This is who you are."
Other people's opinions are a mirror. Their approval, their silence, the way they talk about you when you are not in the room.
And then there is the mirror the enemy holds up on the hard mornings. The one that reflects only the word broken.
The problem is not that we look in mirrors. The problem is that we keep asking the wrong mirror who we are. And every time we do, we walk away believing a reflection God never gave us.
The Man Who Forgot His Face
James wrote about a man who did exactly that.
"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like." (James 1:22-24)
Picture it. A man looks in the mirror, sees his real face, and then walks out the door and forgets it completely.
That is what happens when we hear the truth on Sunday and forget it by Wednesday. We read that we are loved, forgiven, and chosen. Then life gets loud, the old mirrors start talking again, and we forget what God just showed us.
But James did not stop there.
"But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it... they will be blessed in what they do." (James 1:25)
Notice the words looks intently. Not a glance on the way out the door. A long, steady look. And then the part that changes everything: continues in it. The blessing is not just in seeing the truth. It is in living like you believe it.
Mirrors Into a Basin
Now let's go back to the wilderness one more time, beautiful soul.
When Israel built the tabernacle, God told them to make a large bronze basin where the priests would wash before they served. And there is one small verse that tells us where the bronze came from.
"They made the bronze basin and its bronze stand from the mirrors of the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting." (Exodus 38:8)
In the ancient world, mirrors were not glass. They were made of polished bronze, and they were precious. These women gave up the very things they used to look at themselves. And God melted them down and turned them into a place of cleansing.
What a picture. The mirrors that once showed only their outside became the place where God made people clean.
That is what happens when we surrender the mirrors that lie to us. God does not just take them away. He turns them into something holy.
From Glory to Glory
And here is the most beautiful truth of all. When you keep looking into the right mirror, you start to look like what you see.
"And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18)
We become what we behold. If you stare into the mirror of your past, you start to look like your past. But if you keep your eyes on Him, you are slowly transformed into His image.
So when you look into the Word this week, listen for what it says about you.
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9)
The old mirror says broken. The true mirror says chosen.
Your Midweek Mirror Practice
Before the week gets loud, try this:
- Name the mirror. Write down the one mirror you keep asking who you are. Your past, an opinion, or a lie.
- Look intently. Read one scripture slowly and write down exactly what it says about you.
- Do one thing. Choose one way to live like that verse is true today.
Then look at that verse again tonight, so you do not walk away and forget your face.
Note from Eugenia
Beautiful soul, you were never meant to find your reflection in the past, in other people's words, or in the enemy's lies. There is only one mirror that tells the whole truth about you. It shows what still needs His touch, and it never stops showing how loved you are. Keep looking. One day, we will not need a mirror at all.
"For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." (1 Corinthians 13:12)

Frequency Feature: "Beauty And A Beat" by Justin Bieber featuring Nicki Minaj
Beautiful soul, after a whole post about mirrors, I wanted to end with something that makes you smile.
Here is a fun detail. The title of this song is a playful nod to Beauty and the Beast. And if you remember that story, the Beast spent years believing the worst about himself. He hid in his castle and saw only a monster. But the one who loved him saw something else entirely. She saw who he really was.
That is the whole lesson of today, wrapped in a pop song. The old mirrors say beast. The true mirror says beauty. And God has been calling you beautiful since before you ever looked in a mirror.
"He has made everything beautiful in its time." (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
That is why today's Frequency Feature is "Beauty And A Beat" by Justin Bieber featuring Nicki Minaj, from his 2012 album Believe, produced by Max Martin and Zedd. It is pure, joyful energy, the kind of song that makes it hard to stand still.
So this Wednesday, let the beat remind you of something deeper. Your heart has a rhythm God gave it. Turn this one up, look into the right mirror, and dance like someone who finally believes what He says about you.
"You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy." (Psalm 30:11)
